What is a specialty?

A specialty is a niche topic that you have demonstrated experience in. It could be something technical like computer security, or it could be something more artistic like cinema.

If you are approved to be a specialist in a field, you’ll be given access to jobs and pitches in that specialty. Specialist jobs will typically require an expert level knowledge of the specialty, and will pay at a higher rate than standard jobs.

How do I apply to a specialty?

To apply to a specialty, you'll need to add a new sample to your writer profile. Head to your Profile menu, open your Writing Samples tab and click Add Writing Sample.

You'll first be asked to select your general industry, like Business or Lifestyle & Travel. You can then add up to 3 tags, some of which are specialty tags. If you select a specialty tag, your sample will act as a specialty application. See below for a list of all specialty tags.

Once you've selected your tags, we'll ask that you submit a brief bio describing your experience in the subject area. We'll then ask that you provide an original writing sample.

Specialty applications will be reviewed by our team within 1-2 weeks. When our review is complete, you’ll receive an email with feedback on whether or not your application was approved.

Can I reapply if my application is rejected?

It is possible to reapply to specialties in rare circumstances.

If over 6 months have passed since your application and you’ve completed some additional coursework in that field, please reach out to our Support team and let them know.
